An MP has warned that parents who sell stimulant drugs to students are calling for a curse in their families.

Karachuonyo MP Adipo Okuome said it is wrong for a parent to sell drugs to students. Okuome who spoke when he presented a school bus to Kendu Muslim Secondary School in his constituency said such a parent is just ruining the lives of their own children.

"I am warning parents who sell drugs to students. You are ruining someone's child and this will return to haunt you," Okuome said.

There has been an outcry that drug abuse has become a menace. A number of students abuse drugs such as bhang, tobacco, alcohol and kuber. The students sneak into school with the drugs when they return from their holiday. Some of the students are sold drugs by people who live around the schools.

The MP described parents who sell students drugs as social outcasts. His warning comes at a time when many head teachers have decried the rate at which students abuse drugs in schools. He told parents and communities living around schools to co-operate with teachers in fighting drug abuse in schools.

Rachuonyo North Deputy County Commissioner Aron Koross said drug abuse is a serious menace affecting students in many schools, and that security officers are on the lookout to prevent drug abuse.

"Drug abuse is a serious problem in many schools not only in Rachuonyo North Sub-county," Koross said.

He warned that stern legal measures would be taken against anybody found culpable.

"We don't condone drug abuse, anybody found culpable must be arrested and charged," Koross said.

Okuome said the Sh9.8 million bus will help uplift academic standards.

"We have bought this bus using funds from the NG-CDF to uplift academic standards in the school. I want students in Karachuonyo to learn in a conducive atmosphere," Okuome said.
